We collect you from your Casablanca hotel or the airport and begin with the city's showpiece, the Hassan II Mosque one of the largest in the world, built partly over the Atlantic with a minaret that towers above the waves. An hour up the coast is Rabat, Morocco's capital and the calmest of the imperial cities. We visit the Hassan Tower and the unfinished mosque beside it, then the cliff-top Kasbah of the Udayas, where whitewashed-and-blue lanes spill toward the ocean. From Rabat the road climbs into the Rif on a beautiful afternoon drive to Chefchaouen, the famous blue city, in time to settle into your riad.
Mornings are the best time to wander Chefchaouen before the day-trippers arrive. The blue-washed lanes, plant pots, and worn doorways make this one of the most photogenic towns in the country; give yourself an hour with a camera around the medina and the Outa el Hammam square below the kasbah.
Heading south, we stop at Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site, where mosaics still sit in the floors of merchant houses. Nearby Meknes—another imperial city—gives us the monumental Bab Mansour gate and its grand squares before we continue the short hop to Fes for two nights.
Fes deserves a full day and a local guide, its medina, Fes el Bali, is the largest car-free urban area in the world and easy to get lost in. We thread through the maze to the Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 AD and considered the oldest continually operating university on earth, and then to the medersas with their carved cedar and zellij tile work.
No visit is complete without the Chouara Tannery, where leather is still dyed in stone vats exactly as it was centuries ago; you'll smell it before you see it from the terraces above. We pass the gleaming gates of the Royal Palace and stop at artisan workshops for ceramics, brass, and weaving, where you can watch craftspeople at work without any pressure to buy.

Wake before dawn for the desert's best show: sunrise over the dunes, when the sand turns from grey to gold to deep orange. After breakfast at camp we ride back out and drive to Rissani, a historic caravan town, and on to Erfoud, famous for its fossils, the whole region was once an ocean floor, and marble shops here are full of ammonites and trilobites.
The road follows palm groves toward the Todra Gorge, where canyon walls rise 300 meters on either side of a narrow river, a cool, dramatic place to walk. We finish in the Dades Valley, with its rose-colored rock formations and the famous switchback road, where you'll overnight in a kasbah-style hotel.
We follow the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" through the Valley of Roses near Kelaat M'Gouna, the source of Morocco's famous rosewater. Next is Ouarzazate, the country's film capital, where the Atlas Studios have doubled as ancient Egypt, Rome, and Tibet for dozens of Hollywood productions.
The highlight of the day is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village of earthen kasbahs piled against a hillside, instantly familiar from the screen. We cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Morocco's highest major road at over 2,200 meters, with jaw-dropping views at every bend, and descend into Marrakech by evening.
Your last morning is for Marrakech. Free pickup from your Fes riad or hotel, around 8am (a little earlier in winter so we reach Merzouga before sunset). If your riad sits deep in the medina where cars can't enter, we'll meet you at the nearest accessible gate.
Fes to Merzouga is about 470 km (7–8 hours) with stops, so Day 1 is the longest. Days 2 and 3 are far more relaxed. If you're sensitive on winding mountain passes, bring motion-sickness tablets just in case.
Lunches, drinks, monument entry fees and tips are paid in cash. ATMs are reliable in Fes, Midelt, Tinghir and Marrakech, but scarce in between — withdraw enough before you leave the Middle Atlas.
This is a one way tour so all your luggage travels with you and is dropped off in Marrakech. On the camel you only take a small overnight bag to the desert camp – leave the rest safely in the vehicle.
You'll cross cold Atlas passes and hot desert in a day. Bring a warm layer for the night (the Sahara can get close to 0°C in winter) and light, breathable clothing and a scarf for sun and sand during the day.
Vegetarian, vegan, halal and allergy-friendly food is no problem in the camp and hotels, just let us know when you book so we can inform the kitchens beforehand.
