Marrakech is a city of walls, of warm stone and shadow. Ouzoud is the antithesis of all three. Two and a half hours to the northeast, the Haouz plain gives way to olive terraces and red rock, and the Oued el-Abid falls in three stages down a gorge that remains green even in the dry months. You hear the sound before you see it.
The falls themselves are among the highest in Morocco, at around 110 meters. But height isn’t really what makes the place work. It’s the shape of the gorge that makes it tick. You reach the top, with olive trees and little stalls, and the whole way down is a slow reveal: a lookout, a switchback, another lookout from lower down, until you’re at the pool at the bottom with spray in your face and the cliff above you. Very few natural sites around Marrakech offer you that kind of vertical journey on foot.
And then there are the macaques. The Ouzoud is one of the more reliable places in Morocco to see wild Barbary macaques, an endangered species that lives in the oaks and olives along the upper trails.
The road runs past small Berber villages, wheat fields, olive presses, and long views back to the Atlas. A typical shape for the day. Because this is a private trip, every timing below can move to suit you, and the whole day can be reshaped if you would rather start later or stay longer.
Your driver will pick you up at your hotel or riad in the morning. If you are staying inside the medina where vehicles cannot reach the door we agree the nearest accessible car park in advance and your driver waits there which takes about five minutes walking and avoids a lot of confusion at 8 in the morning. As this is a private tour the departure time is up for discussion and not a strict rule.
The route is about 150 km northeast through olive country and rising farmland, with a coffee stop roughly halfway and photo stops wherever the view earns one. The route leaves Marrakech and crosses the Haouz plain, flat and full of olive groves, before the land begins to rise. Roughly halfway there is a natural stop for coffee and a break, usually in a roadside village where the drivers all know the owner. Past that the road narrows and climbs, wheat fields yield way to terraces, and you start seeing flat-roofed Berber villages built into the slope. Your driver will pull over where the view is worth it; this is one of the practical differences a private vehicle makes.
You arrive at the top of the gorge, in the village of Tanaghmeilt. There is a car park, a short walk past stalls selling olives, honey and argan products, and then the ground simply drops away. The first proper viewpoint gives you the falls in full, three tiers of water dropping into a green basin, with the old water mills built along the top of the river.
From the top, a series of viewpoints steps down the side of the gorge. Each one changes the picture: the upper terraces give you scale, the mills, the middle levels bring you level with the spray, and the lower platforms put the cliff face directly above you. In the middle of the day, when the sun is high and the light hits the mist, rainbows form regularly across the lower cascade.
The descent takes most people around thirty to forty minutes at a relaxed pace, on a mixture of stone steps, packed earth and some uneven sections. It is not a technical hike, but it is a real descent and the climb back is the harder half. Your guide sets the pace and knows the alternative routes, including the gentler path if the main steps feel like too much.
Wild Barbary macaques live in the trees along the upper and middle sections. They are usually visible, particularly in the morning and late afternoon, but they are wild animals and we never promise a sighting.
At the base, local boatmen run small flat rowing boats out toward the foot of the main cascade. It is a short trip, it is paid directly to the boatman rather than included in your tour price, and it gets you close enough that you will want to put your phone away. Water levels decide whether the boats run on any given day. It is optional and skipping it costs you nothing.
Restaurants are terraced into the rock on both sides of the pool, most with tables facing the water. Tagine, kefta, salads and mint tea are the standard. Nothing here is fine dining, and that is rather the point: you eat simply with a hundred metres of waterfall in front of you. Lunch is at your own cost, so you decide how long the break lasts.
After the climb back up and a last look from the top, you rejoin your driver and take the same road south. Most travellers are back in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening depending on how long you spent at the falls. Drop-off is at your accommodation, or at Djemaa el-Fna if you would rather be dropped in the middle of the action for dinner.

The Ouzoud Waterfalls are situated some 160 km northeast of Marrakech, along the N8 highway east to Beni Mellal and then north thru the Azilal Province. Under normal conditions the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours each way, for a total road time of 4 to 5 hours over the course of the day. This is longer than some day trips from Marrakech – but the drive itself is interesting enough and the destination spectacular enough that guests who make the journey consistently rate the time investment as worthwhile.
The gorge descent involves about 100m of elevation change on steep, uneven and often wet stone paths. Wear the right shoes , such as closed-toe shoes or light hiking boots with good grip . You can make the descent much harder if you wear sandals or flat-soled sneakers, and you’ll be more likely to slip around water. Beside shoes, you should bring light layered clothing (the gorge is always cooler than Marrakech but the sun can be very strong in the middle of the day), a light waterproof layer for the mist zone near the falls, swimwear if you go between May and September, a small day bag for valuables on the boat ride, and 1.5 to 2 liters of water per person.
It’s helpful to have a few Moroccan dirhams on hand – about 20-30 MAD per person for the boat ride and small donations along the way. Dahbi Morocco tours takes care of the rest so you don’t need to bring cash for anything else along the standard itinerary.
Ouzoud is really good for families. Kids eight and older who are comfortable walking on uneven ground can use the gorge trail. Younger kids can be carried on the easier lower parts. People of all ages can ride the boat. Kids really like the encounter with the macaques, but it’s important for adults to be nearby because macaques are curious and sometimes try to look in bags and pockets. Solo travelers, including women traveling alone, often go to Ouzoud without any problems. The falls area is popular, there are local staff throughout the gorge, and a guided tour gives those traveling alone in a new country an extra layer of comfort and context.
The best light for photography at Ouzoud is in the first two hours after arrival — typically 10 to 11:30 AM — when the sun is at an angle that illuminates the ochre cliff face without direct glare on the water. The full three-tiered cascade is best composed from the gorge rim viewpoints and from the midpoint of the descent trail where all three tiers are visible simultaneously.
The Ouzoud waterfalls area operates almost entirely on cash. Moroccan dirhams are the only currency accepted at the gorge — ATMs are available in the village but not always reliable; bring cash from Marrakech. The boat ride costs approximately 20 to 30 MAD per person (roughly $2–3 USD), payable directly to the boatman. Tipping your guide (50–100 MAD per person for a full day) and driver (30–50 MAD per person) is customary and genuinely appreciated — both are modest amounts relative to the contribution they make to your day. When visiting the Ouzoud village, modest dress is appreciated: covered shoulders and long trousers or skirts for lower-body coverage. Photography of local residents should always be requested rather than assumed; a polite ask in any language is almost always warmly answered.
From our guides: If you want the falls quietly, go down first and eat afterwards. Most groups arrive, eat, then descend, so the lower platforms are noticeably emptier in the first hour after arrival. You also do the hardest climb before lunch rather than after it.

It is possible to get to Ouzoud by public bus, but it is very hard for people who have never been there before. You have to take a CTM or Supratours bus from Marrakech to Béni Mellal (about 2.5 hours), then switch to a local grand taxi for the last 40 km to the village. This trip is not easy to do without knowing Arabic or French because you have to stop in Ait Attab. Grand taxis don’t run on a set schedule, so you need to be careful about when you leave. For experienced independent travelers, it’s an option, but on a long day trip, the time lost to transportation logistics is significant.
If you’re okay with how the roads are in Morocco, you can drive yourself to Ouzoud. There are good signs along the N8 and R304 route, and the road is in good shape. Plan on spending 2.5 to 3 hours each way, and make sure to budget for gas and tolls. Also, know that parking near the falls can be hard to find during the summer peak hours (getting there early solves this). Without a guide, you won’t get the cultural context, restaurant knowledge, and wildlife orientation that you would otherwise get. However, the scenic drive is still enjoyable on its own, and some travelers like the freedom of navigating on their own.
