Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Telouet Kasbah → Aït Ben Haddou
We collect you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the early morning and drive roughly 200 km over the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs steadily through Berber villages and terraced valleys to the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,162 m), with photo stops wherever the view earns them. Just after the pass we leave the main road and take the side road to the Telouet Kasbah, the palace of the Pacha of the Atlas — a half-ruined Glaoui stronghold whose reception rooms still hold carved cedar, painted zellij and stained glass.
We continue down to Aït Ben Haddou, where you check into your hotel. In the afternoon we visit the famous Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen ksar used as a location for Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth and Gladiator. Crossing the riverbed and climbing to the old granary at the top is best in the late afternoon, once the day-trip coaches have left and the mudbrick turns gold. After breakfast we head to Ouarzazate, 30 km east, to visit the Atlas Film Studios — Morocco's Hollywood, where standing sets from Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and The Mummy sit out in the open desert — and the restored Taourirt Kasbah, the Glaoui family's second great fortress in the centre of town.
We then turn off the tarmac for the Fint Oasis, a green canyon of palm groves and four small Berber villages fed by a permanent river, where we stop for lunch in the quietest place on the route. In the afternoon we drive back over the High Atlas, crossing the Tichka pass in different light from the day before, and enjoy the scenery all the way down to Marrakech. Telouet Kasbah, the Glaoui Palace
We leave the main road after the pass for the side road to Telouet — the crumbling palace of the Pacha of the Atlas. From the outside it looks like a ruin. Inside, the reception rooms still hold carved cedar ceilings, painted zellij and stained glass. Most day tours from Marrakech skip it entirely; ours does not.
Aït Ben Haddou at Golden Hour
The thousand-year-old ksar is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most filmed location in Morocco — Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, Gladiator. Because you sleep in the village, you cross the river and climb to the old granary at the top in the late afternoon, when the mudbrick turns copper and the coach crowds have already gone.

Aït Ben Haddou can be done as a long day trip from Marrakech — but you would spend roughly 8 hours in the car for about 90 minutes at the ksar, in the worst light of the day. Two days turns the same drive into an unhurried route with Telouet, an evening at the ksar, and Ouarzazate the next morning.
Pack layers, even in summer
You climb to 2,162 m on Day 1 and drop into a pre-Saharan basin on Day 2 — the temperature swing is real. Bring a fleece or light jacket for the pass and the evening in the village, closed walking shoes for the ksar climb (it is uneven earth and stone), sunscreen and a hat year-round, and a swimsuit if your hotel has a pool.
Decide if you want dunes before you book
This route is kasbahs, cinema and mountains — it does not reach the Sahara. If a camel trek and a night in the sand are non-negotiable, book the 2 day Zagora desert trip or, for the big Erg Chebbi dunes, the 3 day Merzouga tour.
